What is an email template and why use one?
Short answer: A template is an email ready to reuse: subject, body, signature and attachments saved once and for all. It is also the only way to track the delivery and opening of your sends.
What a template holds
A template brings together a name, a subject, a body, a signature and any attachments. When sending, picking it under “Use a template” fills all those fields at once, and they stay editable for that particular send.
Why go through a template
The send window says it itself, next to the selector: using a template “lets you track email delivery/opens by recipients”.
That is the real difference between the two ways of sending:
- With a template, the send is recorded as a campaign. It appears in the Send History, with the number of emails sent, delivered, opened, clicked, failed and bounced, and the detail recipient by recipient.
- Without a template, the email goes out normally, but it leaves no trace in that history and its tracking cannot be consulted.
The templates provided by DAGOBA
Some templates are shared by the platform and show up for everyone, marked “Shared”. You can use them to send an emailing, but not edit them: “This template is shared by DAGOBA — you can use it to send emailings or duplicate it, but you can't edit it.”
To make a version of your own, use “Duplicate”: the copy belongs to you and becomes freely editable.
