How do I change the email address I log in with?
Short answer: Replace the address in the Email Address field, click Save, then open the confirmation message sent to the new address and click its link.
Steps
- Open your avatar menu, top right, then My account.
- Replace the address in the Email Address field.
- Click Save.
- Open the inbox of the new address and click the link in the confirmation message. That link stays valid for two days.
You'll know it worked when: The shield at the end of the Email Address field is green, and its tooltip reads “Validated email address”.
Nothing changes before you confirm
Until you click the link, the old address is still yours: it is still the one that logs you in, and still the one that receives our messages. The app says so after you save — your email address change is pending validation, and meanwhile you keep the old address.
The confirmation message goes to the new address, not the old one. If you mistyped a character, it will not arrive anywhere.
Your other devices are logged out
Saving a new address closes the sessions you have open elsewhere: another browser, a phone, a shared computer. You stay logged in here. On the other devices you will have to log in again — with the old address, as long as the change is not confirmed.
If the address is already taken
An address already attached to an account cannot be taken over. A red banner appears at the top of the page — “This email address is already used by an existing account” — and nothing is saved.
