Light background or deep background — which should I choose?

Short answer: Say which background your logo stays readable on — “Light”, “Deep”, or “All / I am not sure”. The system uses that to pick the right logo for each product color on its own.

How to choose

  • “Light” — the logo shows up well on white, light gray, yellow, light green…
  • “Deep” — the logo shows up well on black, red, blue, dark green…
  • “All / I am not sure” — the logo stays readable either way (rare: it happens with logos that have an outline).

What it actually does

This setting has two effects, and the second one often takes people by surprise.

1. On the products

If your selection contains a t-shirt in light gray and in black, the system will put your “Light” logo on the gray one and your “Deep” logo on the black one all by itself when you drag the product into a collection. You never have to go back over each color by hand.

2. On the shop itself

A logo set to “Deep” is displayed in the shop on a colored square — the shop's main color — both in the header and in the middle of the page. With “Light” or “All / I am not sure”, no square is drawn: the logo sits on the default white background.
That is what makes a white logo visible in a white shop. But be careful: “All / I am not sure” does not produce that square. If your logo needs the colored background to be seen, set it to “Deep”. See How do I put my logo in my shop header.
Switching between “Light” and “Deep” right after uploading a logo is also the fastest way to check its transparency — see How do I check that my logo really has a transparent background.
You'll know it worked when: The system automatically puts the right logo on each product color.
