What file should I prepare for the import?

Short answer: A CSV or XLSX file, one row per person, with a column of email addresses — the only required one. First name, last name and tags are optional.

Steps

  1. In your spreadsheet, make one row per person.
  2. Put each piece of information in its own column, and give them a title on the first row.
  3. Add one or more tag columns if you want to.
  4. Save as CSV or XLSX.
You'll know it worked when: On the mapping screen, each column of your file appears with a suggested field, and the Email field is mapped to a column.

The columns

Column Field to choose Required
The email address Email Yes
The first name First name No
The last name Last name No
A tag Tag No
Everything else Ignore

Tag columns

In a column mapped to the Tag field, it is each cell's value that becomes the person's tag: "parents" on one row, "committee" on another. A tag that does not exist yet is created for you.
You can use several tag columns to put several tags on the same person.
The import guesses each column's role from its title: a column called "Email" is recognized on its own. You can always correct the suggestion on the mapping screen.
